New Year is a time for celebrations, but it’s also a perfect opportunity to take stock. The great writer James Baldwin said: “You’ve got to be truthful about the life you have. Otherwise, there’s no possibility of achieving the life you want.”
With that in mind, I put together a little quiz to help pinpoint where you are and where you want to go. Take some time — half an hour will do — and think about these questions:
1. What things do I value most?
2. How does my daily life reflect those values?
3. What am I most proud of achieving in 2013?
4. What would I change about the last year, if I could?
5. What did I learn in 2013?
The first question will help you clarify your ideals and the second question will identify where the gaps are between the life you want and the life you have. Apply these two questions to every part of your life: relationships, work, Bikram practice, ambitions, etc. You may find you are very close to your ideal life; many of us, I suspect, will find there are areas that need work.
Don’t be discouraged if there is a grand canyon between your answers for questions 1 and 2. Move straight on to question 3 and celebrate the things you’ve achieved. Often, we fall short of our ideals because of unavoidable pressures and circumstances. Focussing on your accomplishments will help you see the year in a positive light.
Be gentle with yourself on question 4. The goal is to use this to illuminate things which you can change moving forward, not to concentrate on perceived flaws.
Finally, put in writing what you learned in 2013. Make a list; put it on index cards or post-its; Tweet it or respond in the comments. Whatever helps you to remember, celebrate and share!
Wishing you all the Best New Year Ever 🙂
