In a perfect world, we could enjoy a month of festive gatherings without a hitch to our usual self-care and wellness practice.
The truth is, unless you are WAY more organised than I am, something usually has to give around Christmas.
However, don’t give up on spending extra time socialising and enjoying good company PLUS staying healthy. Although many festive activities revolve around food and drink (and deliciously so) there are active options that combine holiday cheer with staying strong.
Here are four festive, active winter options — including an excursion.
Ice skating at Alexandra Palace
Polish your blades and slide over to Ally Pally, where you can enjoy a festive spin on the ice rink. According to their website,
“Book onto a Festive Skate session from 28 November – 8 January and enjoy whizzing around the rink to your favourite Christmas tunes, topped off with a mulled wine, Baileys hot chocolate or mince pie from our festive East Court Café!”
Christmas lights walk, central London
One of the lovely things about the city this time of year is how the shops and streets transform into sparkling winter wonderlands. A Christmas lights walk through central London is the perfect combination of exercise and aesthetic enjoyment, with the added bonus that you can go anytime you like, and it doesn’t cost anything.
Follow a recommended route or grab a friend or two and make up your own!
Christmas party dance classes
If you just know you’re going to wind up on the dancefloor after a few glasses of punch, why not do it with style? Christmas party dance classes are an energising way to learn a few moves and — in the right company — are bound to be hilarious. It’s a great, heart-pumping indoor activity that might just turn you into a smooth stepper.
Winter swimming
Swimming in December is not for the faint of heart but, being in London, we’re lucky to have options for those of a less polar bear persuasion. Hampton Pool is open 365 days a year and, praise be, it’s heated!
Those of you willing to brave what nature sends can join the brave souls for the annual Christmas Day swim in the Serpentine, in Hyde Park. It may not be cosy, but it’s definitely kudos.
