Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system for living in balance and harmony with your body and the environment.
During the hot days of summer, we need to adapt to ensure optimum wellness. Otherwise, we run the risk of fatigue, injury or even illness if we fail to acclimatise.
Here are some Ayurveda tips for warm weather wellness.
Eat the right foods
During the summer, avoid spicy or over-acidic foods and focus on cooling meals that will balance your body. Chopra recommends leafy greens, summer squashes, cucumbers, melon, berries, stone fruit, quinoa and basmati rice.
Time your meals
NDTV recommends eating your main meal at midday when your digestive system is most active. This also ensures you have sufficient energy to get through the afternoon and allows your body to relax during the cool evening.
Avoid ice
It might sound contradictory, but it isn’t a great idea to drink iced beverages during hot weather. According to Get The Gloss, it damps down your digestive system and therefore prevents you effectively burning the energy you consume.
Exercise in the morning
The Times of India suggests exercising in the morning. Not only is this the coolest time to exercise if you like outdoor activities, it also charges up your cardiovascular and digestive systems, helping your body remove any toxins and setting you up for a healthy day.
Use cooling essential oils
Essential oils are a great treatment for the body and also calm the mind. During hot weather, focus on soothing oils such as rose, sandalwood, patchouli and jasmine. The Lotus Room’s tip is to apply a few drops to the throat, navel and third eye.
Dress the part
Cool, natural fabrics such as linen, hemp and cotton allow your skin to breathe. They also help wick away sweat and promote air circulation. Even if you stick with your favourite sport gear in the yoga studio, give your body a chance to relax and refresh by wearing natural fibres during other parts of the day.
