Advertising is working overtime to convince us to shop and spend for Black Friday. But is that the best use of our energy and resources?
Buying essentials is necessary, and gifts can be rewarding for both the giver and receiver, but there are lots of ways we can invest our money (and time) that will bring joy and value to the world. And they don’t start at Amazon.
Here are a dozen things you could do today that would bring happiness. Try one — or more!
Call a friend — talk isn’t cheap, it’s invaluable. Speaking to each other maintains our connections and relationships, so take the time to talk.
Bake a cake — whether you dream of a glorious sponge slathered in buttercream, or a toothsome raw vegan treat, taking the time to make something delicious is an act of self-care you can share.
Donate to a worthy cause — from homeless charities to pet shelters, causes that rely on public support are struggling this year, more than ever. Sharing directly with those in need is a way to spread comfort and joy this season.
Start a yoga challenge — make this the first day of seven, 10, 30 or 100 that you dedicate to practicing yoga daily. Your mind and body will be healthier, stronger and more peaceful.
Write something — putting our thoughts and feelings into writing is a powerful tool for self-discovery, communication and healing. Start a journal, or write a long-overdue letter to a loved one.
Take a (virtual) culture trip — you can enjoy the cultural treasures of museums and libraries from the comfort of home. Switch off your phone, make a cup of tea, and dedicate an hour to exploring art you love — or discovering something new!
Get takeaway from a local restaurant — ordering food is a way to give yourself a break at the end of the week while supporting a local business.
