When it comes to keeping fit for Bikram yoga hydration is critical — especially in winter. In the summer, when it’s warm, you have plenty of cues to remind you to drink up, but when water is pouring out of the sky it’s easy to forget that your body still needs hydration!
Remember, you should hydrate before and after your yoga session. Water during class is there to refresh you and keep your reserves topped up. Obviously cold water is less appealing this time of year, but thankfully that is just one of many options. Personally, I like herbal teas or infusions (fresh ginger with a squeeze of lemon and honey is a great one to keep colds at bay!) Not only does it offer a flavour variation from plain water, but many herbal teas offer additional health benefits. Mint is good for digestion, for example, while rosehips are detoxifying and high in vitamin C.
Juices are a great option any time of year. In winter I choose ‘strong’ ingredients like beetroot, leafy greens and carrots for their abundant antioxidants, and add spices like ginger, cinnamon and clove for extra heat.
Last but not least, don’t hesitate to enjoy a glass or two of wine or beer. Red wine, in particular, is full of antioxidants and is a lovely, mellow winter drink, while a crisp beer helps replenish your carbs and electrolytes. Moderation is key, of course. Don’t get so ‘refreshed’ on wine and beer that you can’t make class the next day!
