In a matter of weeks we’ll be setting off for the Yoga Holiday With Paul retreat in the Algarve, which takes place 21-29 June.

And in September, Yoga Holiday With Paul heads to Cyprus for 13-20 September.

retreat

Ground, connect, expand…

I got to thinking about the word retreat. It has a positive connotation of getting away from the stress, distraction and bustle of our daily routine. On the other hand, it has the usually negative meaning of giving up or backing away from a conflict.

It is easy to list the ways that yoga can be viewed as a positive retreat:

  • Relaxation
  • Mindfulness
  • Meditation
  • Flexibility
  • Balance, etc

But is yoga a negative retreat too?

When you look at it from that angle, yoga can be seen as a retreat from things that harm us. For example, yoga helps us retreat from:

  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Attachment
  • Expectations

In fact, yoga can help us remove ourselves from all sorts of damaging behaviour and thought patterns. This retreat is really an advance, a giant step forward to achieving the balance, harmony and well-being we seek.

If you want to experience a yoga retreat, in all the wonderful meanings of the word, drop me a line at YogaHolidayWithPaul@gmail.com to join us in the Algarve or Cyprus.

Onward!

This year’s Yoga Holidays With Paul are coming up fast.

Our first, in the Algarve, takes place 22-29 June, which is just two months from now! The second, in Cyprus, is 14-21 September.

The weeks leading up to the holidays are part of the fun– and the process– of preparing for the holiday. As a teacher, I’m planning, anticipating, and thinking of ways to create an enriching week. As a yogi, here are three ways you can get ready for a fantastic retreat.

Header_In

Study your practice

Investing your time,  money and energy in a yoga holiday is a chance to push the boundaries of your practice. But to do this most effectively, you have to know where those boundaries are! Over the next few weeks be especially mindful and observant in the studio. Take note of what you struggle with, any questions you have, any areas you want to explore. Then, on the retreat, you are ready to dive right in and learn!

Prepare to be away

Distractions from home can suck up your attention and prevent you from getting the full benefit of a yoga holiday. Don’t wait till the last minute to book a pet-sitter, or talk to your partner about how to manage things around the house. If you put everything in place well in advance you can begin the retreat with a relaxed, clear mind.

Focus on food

We are fortunate to have wonderful caterers who provide fresh, delicious vegetarian food for the Yoga Holiday With Paul retreats. To gain the fullest appreciation, it is a good idea to check in with your food habits now. If you are relying on processed foods, try to eat more fresh, whole ingredients. Your body will thank you, and your palate will adjust, allowing you to gain even more goodness from our fantastic retreat cooking.

Three weeks until Yoga Holiday with Paul 2017. From 23-30 June we’ll be enjoying a week of uplifting yoga, meditation, music and sunshine in the beautiful Algarve.

algarve

That means you have three weeks to prepare to get the most out of your yoga holiday experience. Why is this important? Because our minds and bodies need time to absorb the benefits of our practice.

If you work flat out till the night before you leave, you will arrive stressed, tired, and anxious. This means you will spend the first day or two of your yoga holiday just getting your mind and body back to normal. While it is wonderful to have the opportunity to balance, it means you won’t see as much progress or healing during the retreat.

On the other hand, if you start preparing now you will arrive with your mind and body calm and receptive. You will immediately begin absorbing the benefits of the yoga classes, meditation and clean eating.

Here are 3 prep steps to help you get the most out of Yoga Holiday with Paul.

Meditate (just a little bit)xmas-calm

Making time to meditate when you’re rushing around trying to get everything done before your holiday might seem impossible, but you don’t have to spend half an hour a day in lotus position to get the benefits. Set aside five minutes in the morning or evening (or both, if you can manage) to sit quietly and breath. You don’t have to adopt a particular place or posture, just be still where you are. This will help your mind and body relax, and get you used to switching off from external stress.

Sun salutations

Stay grounded by doing a self-practice of sun salutations in the morning. Read the blog post here.

sun salutation

Clean your plate

What you eat profoundly affects your body. Eating clean for the three weeks before your holiday will ensure you arrive with a clear head and healthy body. Focus on eating lots of whole foods, especially seasonal fruits and vegetables. Scroll through the Yoga With Paul recipe archive for delicious inspiration for smoothies, soups, salads and more!

Our annual Yoga Holiday With Paul is fast approaching (can it be we’re halfway to June almost?!) There are only a few spaces left. If you have any of the six signs of needing a yoga retreat email YogaHolidayWithPaul@gmail.com to reserve your spot!

paul pranayama 2

(Thanks to It’s Time To Log Off for inspiring some of these tips!)

1) You’re stressed

If your first thought is “I’m always stressed” you definitely need a break. Yoga Holiday With Paul takes you away from the daily strain of commuting, work and personal commitments. It allows you to rest and focus deeply on restoring your physical and mental energy through twice-daily yoga sessions plus meditation and free time.

2) You’re too tired for yoga

If the thought of doing two yoga sessions a day makes you want to crawl under your mat, you probably need a retreat. Yoga, unlike the demands of your daily life, revitalises and restores. Yes, it’s a physical challenge, but you will be amazed at how quickly it revives you and gives you new energy.

3) You can’t focus

When you’re tired and stressed it is hard to concentrate. This affects every part of your life, from work to hobbies to relationships. Getting away from your routine and spending time every day on focused breathing, meditation and asanas will help you find fresh focus. The techniques you learn will help you when you get back to the “real world” too!

4) You feel stiff and achy

If you spend your day at a desk, or doing repetitive tasks, you probably have a few aches and pains. Maybe it’s your lower back, or your wrists, or you struggle to touch your toes. The truth is daily running around doesn’t help fitness and flexibility. Dedicating yourself to a yoga retreat is a chance to make a significant change in your body, to increase your flexibility and revive tired muscles.

5) You’re sad/angry/depressed/anxious/frustrated/bored etc

Our emotions are tied to our physical well-being. If you regularly struggle with sadness, frustration, anxiety or just plain boredom, it’s a warning sign that things in your life are out of balance. Yoga Holiday With Paul is a space where you can integrate your mind and body, rediscover the joy of movement and tranquility, gain perspective on your life, and look at ways you can make changes for the better.

6) You need some time to yourself

Feel overwhelmed by the demands of bosses, partners, kids, or friends? A yoga retreat is the ideal opportunity to combine alone time with the uplifting experience of group yoga sessions. You’ll find the daily classes give you a chance to be with other people and share positive energy, without placing any expectations on yourself. In your free time you can be as quiet or social as you like (our groups tend to make friends quickly!)

Vibeka, one of our lovely yogis on the 2015 Yoga Holiday With Paul retreat, wrote this piece about her experience.

The bustle of city life becomes a faint memory on the Yoga With Paul holiday. Imagine fruit orchards where you pick fresh figs or oranges still warm from the sun, lovingly converted farm buildings with a personal pool and twice daily yoga and meditation.

Each day is different and inspiring. Some days have yoga with music that weaves seamlessly into the practice. Each tune is selected to fit the yoga poses, and after a few sessions you start to flow with the beats. Silent mediation before each class also adds a new dimension, helping ease you into a strong, balanced yoga practice.

Poses you may have been doing for years become more open and free with Paul’s support. You’ll also learn new types of yoga, improve your breathing technique and do a bit of dancing. One person described feeling ‘high’ towards the end, as the energy and breathing of the class united and the yoga moves synchronized.

But it’s not all about the yoga. The nearest beach, easily accessible by car or bike, is not a tourist trap, allowing for pure and quiet relaxation by the sea. The retreat centre offers daily massages; the pool is a great place to catch up on a book or some rest. I came on my own and easily made holiday pals to take trips to the beach with and have bike rides.

Special note must be made about the food. The cooks varied and tasty vegetarian cuisine is a delight for foodies, and designed to energise and aid the yoga practice. Some of the favourites were cauliflower rice tabbouleh and banana bread with coconut cream.

Yoga With Paul is a great holiday to relax and improve your yoga practice at the same time. While the emphasis is on exercise and health, there is plenty of time for the beach and the evenings provide a great opportunity for a glass of wine and good conversation at the communal meal.

Five Yoga Holiday Essentials

Yoga Holiday with Paul came around quick this year! The sun is shining, the sky is blue, and it is a great pleasure to be back at Quinta Mimosa in the Algarve with a wonderful, diverse group of yogis. Here’s a peek at our five yoga retreat essentials.

IMG_2508

1. Sleep: One of the most important things you can do on a yoga retreat is sleep! Most of us are routinely sleep-deprived due to work or family commitments. This affects us physically and mentally, and makes it harder to achieve the balance that is the goal of yoga. On a retreat, make a conscious effort to get more rest than you would at home.

2. Talk: We observe silence in the studio but outside, it’s good to talk. Often in daily life our communication is just functional – talking about where we need to go or what needs to be done. Retreats are a chance to have relaxed, meaningful conversations that help us see ourselves and the world in new ways.

3. Dance: One of my favourite things about leading Yoga Holiday with Paul is doing yoga with music. Life is better with spontaneous outbreaks of dancing!

4. Eat: Gathering for meals to enjoy delicious vegetarian whole-foods is one of the essential elements of our retreat. What we eat directly influences every part of our body, as well as our mental state. Students are always amazed how good they feel after a week of clean eating.

5. Yoga: Last but not least – retreats are a chance to do lots and lots of yoga. Having two sessions a day allows you to go deeper, explore your body’s potential, and overcome physical and mental resistance. Doing that much yoga can sound intimidating initially but even novice students thrive on the challenge. As ever, the key is to listen to your body and appreciate each posture.

Here is what some of the class of 2014 had to say:

It made me think more about alignment rather than relying on the mirrors and thinking about
other postures that are not covered in Bikram.

Love love love Vinyasa flow as this is what I have started doing at home. It was brilliant to take

The Vinyasa flow and yoga with music classes truly highlight the beauty in practicing as you can
feel your soul in your movements.
~Claire Farrell

Bikram with music was awesome! I am not sure why it isn’t used all the time. The choice of music was great. Now when I hear those songs my mind wanders off to remembering the retreat and
I always am smiling.

Whether it is your first or your 50th yoga holiday you will grow in your practice and experience amazing joy and relaxation. Here’s what some of last year’s yogis had to say…

Being a beginner I was nervous – you hear stories about how tough it can be – but Paul guides you with such a present, kind and safe hand that you feel completely safe to challenge yourself and let go. I always felt great after class. My body was tired sometimes but the good feeling you get from a proper workout. I really felt my practice improved over the week and now I am hooked on Bikram. ~Maria Øveland

The retreat had astounding people, it was well organised, positively nourished our mind, body and souls with the practice, stunning location and unbelievable food. It helped me to overcome tough challenges and start healing for which I am extremely grateful.
~Nikki Taylor
