Despite the shadow cast by the recent terror attacks, Brussels is a cultured, diverse, inclusive city with, among many other things, excellent food. Immigrants have brought ingredients and dishes from far afield, meaning that in addition to waffles and moules frites you can enjoy fresh, delicious vegetarian cuisine from around the world.
Mam Mam, which specialises in Thai-Loatian food, and Ethiopian eatery KoKoB are both in the centre of the city. Though not specifically vegetarian, both offer a great range of veggie and vegan dishes packed with flavour and spice.

Blink and you’ll miss this little treasure, which serves immaculately fresh, perfectly spiced soups, salads, curries and more. The spicy vegetable salad is a great starter which you can also order as a main dish. I never get tired of vegetable green curry with coconut milk, and theirs is superb. The 12.90 Euro set lunch would be a bargain at twice the price.

Ethiopian cuisine uses lots of beans, pulses and vegetables, making it an easy, fun way to eat vegetarian. Food is served in traditional fashion, on a big platter in the middle of the table with baskets of injera (flatbread) which you use to scoop up bites of food. Unfortunately for my gluten free friends, their injera is made from a mix of teff (a gluten-free seed) and less expensive wheat flour. However, they are happy to provide rice as an alternative.
