One of the many fantastic things about London is that it offers so many opportunities to expand our minds and engage with other people and cultures.

Right now, at the Imperial War Museum, is a fascinating series of exhibitions and events called Culture Under Attack that looks at the relationship between culture and war.

This might sound gloomy but in fact the exhibition is celebration of the power of music, art, photography and dance to resist the horrors of war.

According to the IWM website:

Culture Under Attack is a season of three free exhibitions, live music, performances and talks at IWM London that explore how war threatens not just people’s lives, but also the things that help define us. Telling stories spanning 100 years, Culture Under Attack reveals why some try to erase or exploit culture, while others risk everything to protect, celebrate and rebuild it.

Among the exhibitions, is Art in Exile which shows how cultural treasures in British museums and galleries were evacuated and protected during the Second World War.

There is also an exhibition called Rebel Sounds, focused on music:

Discover artists who have risked their lives in times of conflict for the music they love in Rebel Sounds, our powerful new exhibition at IWM London.

From Hitler’s persecution of swing and jazz groups to the ban of music in Northern Mali under Islamist rule in 2012, oppressive regimes have tried to erase forms of culture and expression. In spite of this, there have always been those willing to risk everything to protect their threatened culture.

Culture Under Attack exhibitions are free and run from now until 5 January.

Only four spots left for Yoga Holiday with Paul on 19-26 June in the Algarve. To reserve yours email: YogaHolidayWithPaul@gmail.com

Thinking about it? Here are five signs you need a Bikram holiday.

Awkward pose

Awkward pose

1. Your Vitamin D level is so low it drags on the ground when you walk
Still feeling drained and droopy after the winter? Your body needs regular doses of sunshine to boost natural Vitamin D production — especially if you’re dark-skinned. A week in the sun will transform how you feel as you get your vitamin levels up and enjoy the healing effect of warmth and good vibes.

2. The last time you made a new friend All Saints were in the charts
It can be difficult to make friends as adults, especially in a city like London. Everyone is busy with their own lives, work, partners, kids, etc and there just isn’t time to build new connections. Yoga Holiday with Paul is an opportunity to meet people from other walks of life and really get to know them. Great friendships are formed every year!

3. Making dinner involves puncturing cellophane and/or waiting for delivery
Eating well is another thing that goes by the wayside in busy lives. Our yoga holiday is catered with delicious, fresh-made vegetarian and vegan wholefood cooking. You’ll discover how cleansing and revitalising it is to eat clean, natural foods for a week!

4. You’ve been doing Bikram for years OR you’ve never done Bikram

One fantastic thing about our Bikram holiday is that it doesn’t matter what level you are. We have regular practitioners and students who have never done a Bikram class in their life. The classes are tailored to ensure you get exactly what you need for where you are in your practice. Plus we mix it up with fun stuff like yoga and dance, and Vinyasa flow.

5. The nearest you get to meditation is concentrating on holding in your belly to zip up your trousers
We all know that meditation can be a powerful tool to clear and calm our minds, but it can be difficult to start the practice on your own. Yoga Holiday with Paul goes deep into the meditation and concentration aspect of yoga, giving you a chance to cultivate your personal meditation practice.

If you love art, fashion, and creativity do NOT miss Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the V&A Museum. It runs through the summer till 2 August but tickets are already sold out well into May!

I just have one word for it: Wow. It is amazing to see what Lee McQueen created over such a short life span.

The show spans his career from 1992 till his death in 2010. Encompassing his clothing and stage shows, the exhibition reveals his rebellious, brilliant creative mind. As the website says: “McQueen consistently promoted freedom of thought and expression and championed the authority of the imagination.”

It is a thing of beauty.

April and most of May are sold out, so I’d book soon! Tickets and info

A new free exhibition on the black British experience at the V&A starting Monday February 16 2015 and running till Sunday May 24. Well worth checking out!

black british
This is a new display in Gallery 100 that showcases a variety of photographic responses to black British experience from the 1950s to the 1990s. The images were acquired as part of a collaborative project with Black Cultural Archives which aims to increase the number of black British photographers and images of black Britain in the V&A. 118 works from 17 artists have been collected so far, with pieces ranging from Yinka Shonibare’s large-scale series Diary of a Victorian Dandy to JD Okhai Ojeikere’s black and white studies of elaborate head ties worn by Nigerian women.

The exhibition includes oral histories from a range of subjects including the photographers themselves, their relatives and the people depicted in the images.

The Black Cultural Archives will also present an exhibition drawn from the Staying Power collection at their heritage centre in Brixton (1 Windrush Square, SW2 1EF. Thursday January 15 to Tuesday June 30, Tuesday-Sunday 10am-6pm).

pina bausch
Once a dancer, always a dancer… so I’m excited to be planning a night at Sadler’s Wells Theatre for Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal.

Tanztheater Wuppertal was created after her partner Ralf Borzik passed away, and is a moving piece about love, loss and death. I love her work for its quirky sets, lovely themes, distinctive costumes and the skill of the dancers, many of whom have been with the company for years. Actually, I auditioned for her many years ago, which was an honour! Life led me down a different path but I am looking forward to immersing myself in her unique artistic world for an evening.

If you’re a fellow dance fan the performances run from 7-16 February and you can buy tickets online.

If you love the raw, unscripted energy of street photography you should pay a visit to the William Klein exhibition at the Tate Modern, featuring New York photographer William Klein.
klein
Klein has been taking pictures on the streets of New York for more than 50 years, capturing the fluctuations in the city’s fortunes and the changing faces of its inhabitants. It is striking and inspiring. The exhibition runs till 20 January and I definitely recommend it!

If you want to read more about him there is a nice profile in the Telegraph.
