I love fruit and fresh juice. Fruit is full of vitamins, antioxidents, water, fibre and essential minerals. It is delicious, portable, enjoyable and a great alternative to scoffing chocolate for a sugar fix. A sugar fix is still a sugar fix, though, so how you eat fruit matters. Some ways are better than others. These 5 tips will help you get the most out of eating fruit.

Eat whole fruit – so you get all the beneficial fibre and nutrients.

Save dried fruit for a treat – dried fruit is delicious because it is basically pure sugar. Have the odd Medjool date or handful of apricots instead of a chocolate bar or biscuit.

Mix your juices – pure fruit juice is very high in sugar so I like to combine fruits and vegetables in my juices. Adding cucumber, kale, carrot, spinach, etc adds loads of nutrients without amping up the sugar content.

Make friends with frozen – buying fresh fruit such as berries or tropical fruit can be hugely expensive, and often the quality isn’t great. Flash frozen fruit is still packed with nutrients, but is cheaper and can even taste better.

Eat a wide range of fruit – boost your nutrition by eating a wide variety. Bananas are high in potassium, perfect for replenishing after a hot yoga class; apples are full of fibre; citrus is packed with vitamin C; berries are loaded with antioxidents and low in calories.
