Last week I wrote about the bliss of my medical pedicure which led me to think again about the importance of the foot in yoga practice. Our feet connect us to the earth. They hold us. Support us. Ground us physically. So when I say in class, “Distribute the weight evenly” or “spread your toes” do it! Balance begins with your feet — both in yoga and in life.

To improve your footwork, I recommend Tadasana – mountain pose. You can do this at home to ground yourself and build awareness for your yoga practice. Tadasana can be thought of as a preparation for all the other standing poses. You stand with your weight distributed evenly on both feet, aligning your whole body with calm mindfulness.
