Whoa! Quite a speedy 7AM class this morning. There were quite a few students rushing through poses like they were an Underground train whose doors were shutting.

I guess it’s natural to be a little out of sync after a break but if think that the fastest way to get back in shape is to practice fast, here’s some advice: Slow Down!

This time of year we’re bombarded with ads for exercise DVDs, diet plans, fad workouts and get-fit-quick advice. But that is NOT what Bikram yoga practice is about. The aim of yoga is total body fitness and wellness. It isn’t just about losing those holiday pounds or toning up, it is a holistic discipline for your mind, body and spirit.

Breathing, stretching, holding the poses and relaxing in savasana are all essential. If you hurry through, take shortcuts or get sloppy about your form you are undermining your practice. Instead of moving forward you’ll slide back.

Remember this next time you’re in class and tempted to spring out of a pose early: every moment counts.

Slow down. Breathe. Relax. Find the joy in every asana.
