‘Tis the season of mulled wine, mince pies, festive biscuit tins the size of lifeboats and obligatory gluttony around the dinner table. No wonder most people welcome the new year with fuzzy heads and overhanging waistbands.

Not to be a food Scrooge, but deep down you already know what I’m going to say: if you want to get through the holidays in a fit state you need to make a little effort with what you eat. There is no need to put yourself on a lettuce-and-water regime, just don’t pretend that a slice of Christmas cake counts as one of your five a day.
